"Some of the sweetest memories are made long after the rest of the world has fallen asleep."
The mansion was silent.
The clocks had long struck midnight.
Outside...
A cool breeze rustled the leaves in the garden.
Inside...
Everyone was supposedly asleep.
Or so they claimed.
Aadhya lay awake in bed.
She turned to one side.
Then the other.
She sighed.
"I can't sleep..."
She glanced at the clock.
12:18 a.m.
Quietly slipping out of bed, she wrapped a light shawl around her shoulders and tiptoed out of her room.
The hallway was dark.
She carefully walked downstairs, trying not to make any noise.
"I knew I wasn't the only one awake."
Aadhya jumped.
Vivaan stood at the bottom of the staircase with his arms folded and a mischievous grin.
"Twinny!"
She placed a hand over her heart.
"You scared me!"
He laughed.
"What are you doing awake?"
"I couldn't sleep."
"You too?"
He nodded.
"I was going to find snacks."
Aadhya giggled.
"Of course you were."
Together they quietly walked toward the kitchen.
Vivaan carefully opened the freezer.
His eyes sparkled.
"We still have chocolate ice cream!"
"And mango!"
"And cookies and cream!"
Before either of them could grab a tub...
Another voice came from behind.
"I was wondering who was stealing from my freezer."
They turned.
Advik leaned against the kitchen door with crossed arms.
"You two started without me?"
Vivaan pointed accusingly.
"You weren't invited."
"I invite myself."
Three spoons.
Three ice cream tubs.
Mission accomplished.
Or so they thought.
A few moments later...
Footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Vihaan walked into the kitchen, rubbing his sleepy eyes.
He stopped.
Looked at the three of them.
Then at the open freezer.
"...Seriously?"
Advik grinned.
"You want some."
"I don't."
He paused.
"...Which flavours?"
Vivaan proudly held up the tubs.
"Chocolate."
"Cookies and cream."
"Mango."
Vihaan sighed dramatically.
"Fine."
"But only one scoop."
Advik handed him a spoon instead.
"No bowls."
"Tonight we eat like professionals."
Just as everyone took their first bite...
Another familiar voice spoke.
"So..."
"This is where everyone disappeared."
Aryaveer entered the kitchen.
Still wearing his glasses.
Still holding a file.
He looked from one guilty face to another.
"What exactly is happening?"
Silence.
Vivaan slowly pushed a tub toward him.
"Ice cream?"
Aryaveer looked at it.
Then at Aadhya's hopeful face.
A tiny smile appeared.
"I suppose one spoon won't hurt."
Advik immediately handed him the biggest spoon.
Not even five minutes later...
Rudransh entered carrying a glass of water.
He blinked at the growing crowd.
"I heard voices."
Then he noticed the ice cream.
"You all started a party?"
"No," Advik replied seriously.
"This is a highly confidential medical conference."
Rudransh raised an eyebrow.
"With chocolate ice cream?"
"It helps us think."
He shook his head, laughing softly.
"You people..."
Vivaan quickly offered him the mango tub.
"You know you want it."
"...Just a little."
Only one brother was missing.
Veeransh.
As if on cue...
The kitchen light switched on again.
Veeransh walked in, holding a book.
He looked at everyone gathered around the island.
Six spoons.
Five open ice cream tubs.
Everyone staring at him.
He sighed.
"I should've known."
Advik smiled.
"Welcome."
"No."
"I came for water."
Vivaan quickly handed him a spoon.
"You can drink water tomorrow."
Veeransh stared at the spoon.
Then at Aadhya.
She smiled innocently.
"Please?"
He sighed in surrender.
"...One spoon."
Five minutes later...
He was eating directly from the cookies-and-cream tub.
Advik whispered dramatically,
"We got him."
The kitchen soon echoed with soft laughter.
No one cared about manners anymore.
Everyone simply sat around the large kitchen island.
Sharing ice cream straight from the tubs.
Passing flavours around.
Stealing each other's spoons.
Complaining whenever Advik took the largest bites.
Vivaan suddenly asked,
"Papa isn't coming?"
Almost as if summoned...
Vikram walked in wearing a simple night kurta.
He looked at the scene before him.
Seven guilty faces.
Five melting tubs of ice cream.
He folded his arms.
"So..."
"This explains why the freezer is always empty."
Advik smiled sheepishly.
"Would you like some?"
Vikram laughed.
"I raised six sons."
"I know exactly how these midnight meetings work."
He picked up a spoon.
"Move over."
The siblings cheered.
For a while...
They simply talked.
Vihaan shared stories about his school football matches.
Advik confessed how he had once hidden Aryaveer's presentation files as a child.
"I thought they were colouring papers."
Aryaveer sighed.
"I searched for those files for three hours."
Vivaan laughed so hard that he nearly dropped his spoon.
Rudransh smiled.
"Remember when Advik tried making breakfast?"
Vihaan burst into laughter.
"He added salt instead of sugar!"
Advik defended himself immediately.
"The containers looked identical."
"They were labelled."
"I was six!"
Aadhya listened quietly.
Her heart felt warm.
She had never heard siblings teasing each other with so much love.
Every story ended with laughter.
Not anger.
Then...
The conversation slowly became quieter.
Vivaan looked toward the family photograph hanging near the dining area.
"I wish Mom could've seen this."
Silence settled over the kitchen.
No one spoke for a few moments.
Unexpectedly...
Veeransh closed the lid of the ice cream tub.
He looked at the photograph too.
Then...
For the first time in years...
He began speaking.
"You know..."
"When I was eight..."
"Mom once decided to make homemade mango ice cream."
Everyone looked at him.
Even Vikram smiled gently.
Veeransh continued.
"She told all of us to stay out of the kitchen."
"We promised."
Advik immediately coughed.
"We lied."
A faint smile appeared on Veeransh's face.
"We sneaked in anyway."
Vivaan listened with sparkling eyes.
"What happened then?"
Veeransh chuckled softly.
"Advik tried tasting the mixture."
"He slipped."
"The bowl flew into the air..."
"And the entire kitchen..."
"...was covered in mango pulp."
The siblings burst into laughter.
Even Vikram laughed, remembering the day.
Aryaveer smiled.
"I still remember Mom chasing all of us with a towel."
Rudransh laughed.
"She wasn't even angry."
"She kept laughing because we looked like little mangoes."
Vihaan added,
"She made us clean everything."
"And then she still gave us ice cream."
Vivaan smiled sadly.
"I wish I remembered that."
Veeransh looked at his youngest brother.
Then gently ruffled his hair.
"You were too little."
"But trust me..."
"Mom would've loved seeing all of us together tonight."
Aadhya quietly watched him.
She knew...
Talking about their mother had once been the hardest thing for Veeransh.
Tonight...
He wasn't speaking with pain.
He was speaking with love.
And that was healing.
Aadhya softly said,
"I wish I could've met Mom."
The kitchen grew quiet again.
Vikram smiled warmly.
"You would've loved her."
Aryaveer nodded.
"She would've spoiled you."
Rudransh chuckled.
"She always wanted a daughter."
Vihaan grinned.
"She would've teamed up with you against us."
Advik pointed dramatically.
"No."
"Against me."
Everyone laughed.
Veeransh looked at Aadhya.
Then said softly,
"I think..."
"...she would've called you her miracle."
Aadhya lowered her eyes, trying to hide the tears forming there.
The ice cream tubs were almost empty now.
Vivaan suddenly raised his spoon like it was a sword.
"I have an announcement!"
Everyone looked at him.
"We should do this every month!"
Advik nodded enthusiastically.
"Excellent idea."
"Official Midnight Snack Mission."
Vihaan raised his spoon too.
"I'm in."
Rudransh smiled.
"As long as someone brushes their teeth afterward."
Aryaveer laughed.
"I'll adjust my meetings."
Veeransh looked around at all of them.
Then gave a small nod.
"I'll come."
Finally...
Vikram lifted his spoon.
"It's settled."
"On the first Saturday of every month..."
"No matter how busy life becomes..."
"We'll all meet in this kitchen."
"For a midnight snack."
"And no one is allowed to miss it."
Everyone placed their spoons together in the middle.
"Deal!"
Aadhya smiled brighter than ever.
Because for most families...
Midnight meant sleeping.
For the Rathores...
Midnight had just become another excuse to make beautiful memories together.
And deep in her heart...
Aadhya knew she would treasure this tradition for the rest of her life.
To Be Continued...
