"The people who love you don't measure their care in words—they measure it in sleepless nights."
The Diwali celebrations had finally come to an end.
The guests had left.
The laughter had faded into comfortable silence.
The last few diyas still flickered softly around Rathore Mansion, their warm glow reflecting against the marble floors.
It had been the happiest Diwali Aadhya had ever celebrated.
Her first Diwali...
As a Rathore.
The next morning...
The mansion was unusually quiet after the previous night's festivities.
Most of the family was still asleep.
Only Rudransh, as always, was awake early, enjoying his morning tea while reading the newspaper.
Ramu Kaka busied himself in the kitchen, preparing breakfast.
Around eight o'clock...
Vivaan bounded upstairs.
He stopped outside Aadhya's room and knocked enthusiastically.
"Twinny!"
"No school today!"
"We can finish all the chocolates Bhaiya gave you!"
No answer.
He knocked again.
"Twinnyyy?"
Still nothing.
His smile slowly faded.
Carefully, he opened the door.
The curtains were still drawn.
Aadhya lay curled beneath her blanket.
She looked unusually pale.
"Twinny?"
He walked closer.
"You never sleep this late..."
He gently touched her shoulder.
She stirred weakly but didn't open her eyes.
"Hmm..."
Vivaan frowned.
"You okay?"
She tried to sit up.
"I..."
Before she could finish—
Everything around her spun.
She took one step toward him.
Then...
Her vision blurred completely.
"Tw—"
Her body went limp.
"AADHYA!"
Vivaan barely managed to catch her before she hit the floor.
His frightened scream echoed through the mansion.
"PAPA! BHAIYA!"
"TWINNY FAINTED!"
Within seconds...
Footsteps thundered through the hallway.
Aryaveer arrived first.
"What happened?"
Vivaan's eyes were filled with tears.
"She just... she just fell!"
Rudransh rushed in immediately after him.
He knelt beside Aadhya without wasting a second.
"Move back a little."
His calm voice steadied everyone.
He gently checked her pulse.
Then placed his hand on her forehead.
His expression changed instantly.
"She's burning."
He quickly took out the digital thermometer from the emergency medical kit kept in every bedroom.
A minute later...
The thermometer beeped.
103.1°F
Vihaan stared at the screen.
"One hundred and three?"
Advik's playful smile vanished.
"That's really high..."
Vikram had reached the room by then.
"Rudra?"
Rudransh looked up.
"It's a high viral fever."
"We need to bring the temperature down immediately."
He gently lifted Aadhya onto the bed.
She was barely conscious.
Her face had turned red with fever.
Tiny beads of sweat covered her forehead.
She murmured something softly.
No one could understand.
Rudransh immediately slipped into doctor mode.
"Vivaan."
"Bring the first-aid kit."
"I'm already holding it!"
"Good."
"Vihaan."
"Cold water and clean towels."
"On it."
"Advik."
"Call our family physician and tell him her temperature."
"I'm calling now."
"Arya Bhai."
"Please bring the medicine box from my room."
He nodded without a word.
"Papa..."
Rudransh looked at Vikram.
"I'll manage her treatment."
"If her fever doesn't reduce or new symptoms appear, we'll admit her immediately."
Vikram trusted him completely.
"Do whatever she needs."
Within minutes...
Everything was ready.
Cold compresses.
Medicines.
Water.
A thermometer.
The family physician spoke with Rudransh over the phone and agreed with the initial treatment.
"It appears to be a viral fever," Rudransh explained after ending the call.
"No signs that she needs hospitalization right now."
"But..."
He looked at everyone seriously.
"She'll need strict observation."
"No one should ignore even the smallest change."
Everyone nodded.
Rudransh carefully gave her the prescribed medicine with a few sips of water.
Aadhya opened her eyes for a brief moment.
She looked confused.
"...Bhaiya?"
"I'm here."
She tried to apologize automatically.
"I'm sor..."
Rudransh gently interrupted.
"No apologizing."
"Just rest."
She gave a tiny nod before falling asleep again.
The atmosphere inside the mansion completely changed.
No one laughed.
No one joked.
The cheerful Diwali decorations suddenly seemed strangely quiet.
Every thirty minutes...
Rudransh checked her temperature.
Every hour...
He noted it down carefully.
Aryaveer cancelled all his meetings.
"My office can wait."
Vihaan switched off the television downstairs.
"It'll be too noisy."
Advik silently kept making ORS and warm soup under Rudransh's instructions.
Even Veeransh, who usually spent his free time reading alone, quietly brought extra blankets and adjusted the room curtains so the sunlight wouldn't disturb her.
He never said much.
But he stayed nearby.
By afternoon...
The fever remained stubborn.
102.9°F
It had reduced only slightly.
Rudransh frowned.
"We'll continue monitoring."
Vivaan hadn't left the room even once.
He sat beside the bed, holding Aadhya's hand.
Every now and then...
He gently called,
"Twinny?"
She would hum weakly in response.
Only then would he relax.
Around lunchtime...
Aryaveer entered carrying a tray.
"Vivaan."
"Come eat."
He shook his head immediately.
"I'm not hungry."
"You haven't eaten since morning."
"I'll eat later."
Aryaveer looked at him patiently.
"You can't help your sister if you make yourself sick."
Vivaan's eyes filled with tears.
"What if she wakes up and I'm not here?"
"I promised I'd never leave her alone."
Before Aryaveer could answer...
A weak voice came from the bed.
"...Vivaan..."
Everyone turned.
Aadhya had opened her eyes slightly.
She smiled faintly.
"You should eat..."
He quickly leaned closer.
"Only if you promise not to disappear."
Even with a high fever...
She managed a tiny smile.
"I promise."
Reluctantly...
Vivaan agreed to eat—but only after making Aryaveer promise to call him the moment she woke up again.
As evening approached...
The fever slowly began responding to the medicines.
101.8°F
Rudransh finally let out a quiet breath.
"That's better."
"We're heading in the right direction."
The entire family visibly relaxed.
That night...
No one wanted Aadhya to be alone.
Aryaveer took the first watch.
Rudransh stayed beside her to monitor her condition.
Vihaan brought fresh towels every hour.
Advik made sure everyone else remembered to eat.
Veeransh quietly left a flask of warm water beside the bed before returning with another blanket when the room grew cooler.
Vivaan curled up on the sofa next to her bed.
He hugged his pillow tightly.
"I'm sleeping here."
"No arguments."
Rudransh smiled softly.
"Alright."
"But if I need space to check her..."
"I'll move."
Vivaan nodded seriously.
"Deal."
Late that night...
Aadhya opened her eyes for a few seconds.
The fever still made everything blurry.
But she could make out familiar faces.
Aryaveer sitting with his laptop closed.
Rudransh checking her temperature.
Vivaan asleep beside her bed.
She smiled weakly.
For years...
Whenever she had fallen sick...
She had hidden it, afraid of becoming a burden.
Today...
Seven people had rearranged their entire day...
Just because she had a fever.
A single tear slipped from the corner of her eye.
Not because she was in pain.
But because...
For the first time in her life...
She wasn't fighting illness alone.
To Be Continued...
